Rest, Recovery & Reflection
Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way. Eight weeks ago I suffered an injury at football resulting in a perforated abdominal and torn adductor. For someone who thrives on physical activity—whether it's hiking, surfing, or running—this injury felt like a major setback. But as I navigated the recovery process, I discovered invaluable lessons about rest, reflection, and the power of mindfulness.
Week 1-2: The Initial Shock and Acceptance
The first two weeks were the hardest. Being forced to give up running and surfing and fully rest was a daunting prospect. For someone who finds solace and joy in movement, the sudden halt felt like losing a part of myself. However, I knew that accepting the situation was crucial for my recovery.
During this time, I leaned heavily on mindfulness practices and the shakti mat. Instead of focusing on what I couldn't do, I directed my energy towards being present. Simple breathing exercises and meditation became daily rituals, helping me stay grounded and positive.
Week 3-4: Embracing Stillness and Self-Care
As the initial pain began to subside, I focused on self-care. Gentle stretching and breathing exercises became my new form of movement. Though I missed the adrenaline rush of a good run or the tranquillity of a surf session, these gentle activities helped maintain a connection with my body.
Mindfulness continued to play a vital role. I used visualisation techniques, imagining the healing process within my body. This mental exercise not only boosted my spirits but also reinforced the importance of a positive mindset in physical healing.
Week 5-6: Rediscovering Movement
By the fifth week, I began incorporating light, low-impact exercises into my routine. Short walks in nature, carefully chosen to avoid strain, replaced my usual hiking expeditions. These outings were more than just physical activity; they were a mental escape, allowing me to reconnect with the natural world and feel a sense of normalcy.
Being present during these walks was crucial. I practised mindful walking, paying attention to each step, the sounds around me, and the sensation of the earth beneath my feet. This practice not only helped prevent overexertion but also deepened my appreciation for the small joys of movement.
Week 7-8: Building Strength and Confidence
As I entered the final phase of my recovery, I gradually began to build my routine. Gentle strength training and yoga helped rebuild muscle and flexibility. Each day, I listened closely to my body, respecting its limits and celebrating its progress.
Throughout this journey, the importance of mindset and mental health became abundantly clear. Maintaining a positive outlook, even on difficult days, was essential. Mindfulness anchored me, providing a consistent source of calm and focus.
Reflections and Moving Forward
This eight-week recovery taught me that setbacks are not the end, but a part of the journey. They offer an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and grow. My love for hiking, surfing, and running remains as strong as ever, but now, I approach these activities with a deeper appreciation and a renewed sense of gratitude.
For anyone facing a similar challenge, remember: your body is resilient, and with the right mindset and mindfulness practices, you can navigate the path to recovery. Embrace each step, no matter how small, and trust in your ability to heal and thrive.
Stay active, stay mindful, and always flow forward.
